Interior Design Trends 2021

We’re officially halfway through 2021, allowing us to really hone in on which interior design trends are on their way out and which ones are here to stay. Some readers may be surprised to hear that minimalist-inspired homes are being replaced by living spaces adorned in floral designs and vintage pieces, in an attempt to imitate the comfort of Grandma’s home.

Ultimately, your main goal with designing your home should be a reflection of your personal style. Today’s top trends may not resonate with you and that’s okay. Fill your home with what you love to create a space that you never want to leave. Regardless, trendy designs can always serve as inspiration and you may just fall in love with some of today’s most sought-after designs.

Below, we’re listing some of the top interior design trends of 2021.

Floral prints

All-white interiors are on their way out, and for good reason. Who really wants a home filled with pieces that would be ruined from one simple spill… it’s truly impractical and not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing. Cue: floral patterns from couches to wallpaper! Inspired by nature, floral prints add a calming comfort to any home, providing color as well as eclectic charm.

Antique, vintage, and “granny” style

Incorporating vintage pieces into your home is not only more sustainable and often affordable, but it also provides feelings of comfort and unique accents.  The “grand millenial” or “granny style” is a design trend that may provoke some skepticism at first, given its presumably negative connotation, but allow us to explain…

When it comes to designing your home to imitate that of your grandmother’s – think antique décor and soft colors – it’s about creating feelings of nostalgia and comfort through timeless traditions. These days, we’re spending more time in our homes than ever before so trends are leaning more towards true comfort, rather than just visually pleasing furniture.

Peel and stick wallpaper

Whether you’re a renter or homeowner, peel and stick wallpaper is a low-commitment, easy-to-install upgrade to any home. You’ve got plenty of options when it comes to incorporating peel and stick wallpaper into your living space, whether you’re looking to brighten up your bathrooms, add a stylish accent wall, or change up the design of an entire room. 2021 is all about adding texture, patterns, and warmth to your home, and wallpaper is a super simple way to achieve this.

Warm tones and pastels

We’ve mentioned that comfort is one of the main trends of 2021, which is why hues are leaning more towards warm tones and pastels. Pastels and earthy tones are naturally calming and can provide color without being too “in your face.” Consider adding some soft pinks, terra cotta, or an earthy green to your home’s color palette.

Natural materials

(Some of the natural materials used in this design above, were cork barstool seats and the beetle-kill pine used for the open display cabinet on the island.)

It’s hard to go anywhere without coming into contact with wicker and rattan materials these days. These lightweight and versatile materials are understandably making quite a statement in the world of interior design, given the fact that they are naturally sourced and can be used for indoor and outdoor spaces.

However, this trend goes beyond just wicker baskets and rattan bed frames — sustainable accents such as organic cotton throws, rugs made from recycled materials, and repurposed furniture are on the rise. Homeowner’s are becoming more and more intentional with their interior design, in the hopes of helping the planet while also creating a beautiful living space. It’s important to ask the question, “Where did this come from?” when purchasing pieces for your home and it is always worth it to spend extra money on items that were made ethically and sustainably.

Colorful kitchen cabinets

For some reason, we’ve seen a lot of grey kitchen cabinets over the last few years. In 2021, we’re hoping to replace cold, grey kitchens with those that are filled with more color and character. Many people are leaning into the green kitchen cabinet trend. Green can fit well with warm and cool color palettes and since it reminds us of nature it adds a comforting touch. We recommend incorporating any of your favorite colors into your kitchen, rather than just following the trends. Colorful kitchen cabinets are a timeless accent that will represent your own personal style and taste.

Make it personal

Interior Design Trends of 2021 In all honesty, we recommend practicing selfishness when you design your home — seriously! You never want to design your home with the thought of what buyers will want down the line. Unless you’re planning to move soon, you should be designing your home to represent your own personal style and creating a space that you absolutely love. Trends are a great way to spark creativity but never choose a piece of furniture or color palette for your home simply for the reason of following what’s trending. A mismatched home, filled with pieces that bring you joy can be way better than a perfectly matching home!

By letting go of perfection and focusing more on personal style, you’ll turn your home into just that, a home.
